Meet our new ship, the Ponant L’Austral we are embarking on a new adventure! We will be flying to Buenos Aires, Argentina and joining our fellow travelers. The next day we will board a charter flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, Argentine. The flight is about three and a half hours. We will then take a bus tour of Tierra del Fuego and the National Park before having some time to explore Ushuaia before we board our ship.
Once onboard we will have our safety briefing, be outfitted for our expedition gear as well as being preparing the gear that we brought with us for being vacuumed to remove any possible contaminates we could bring to Antarctica. We will spend two days crossing the Drake Passage and then five days exploring Antartica before we again cross the Drake Passage to return to Ushuaia.
The map above gives the general areas that will will be traveling. There will be opportunities for landings each day (weather permitting). Joe and Katie are signed up for Sea Kayaking in the Southern Ocean!
The new trip is a partnership between Ponant and Smithsonian Journeys. In addition to the naturalists onboard we will also have two guest experts during our sailing.
